AirWaves Scholarship Winners
(June 5, 2002)
Surrey high school students with a keen grasp of Lower Mainland air quality issues are the winners of this year’s AirCare AirWaves scholarships.
Kelsey Freesia Pelton, a Grade 12 student at Semiahmoo Secondary School in Surrey and a Grade 12 student team of Federico Cahis, Sean Ewing, Will Hemrick, Wes MacDonald and Chad Massa of Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary School in Surrey were the winners selected from a group of 62 entries in this year’s contest.
The AirWaves Scholarship Contest encourages Grade 11 and 12 students attending Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley High Schools to earn $1,500 scholarships toward post-secondary education. Two are available each year. Students write, perform and produce 30-second Public Service Announcements focusing on the impact that vehicle emissions have on local air quality, how air quality affects personal health and the environment and the role that the AirCare program plays in reducing harmful vehicle emissions.
The winning entries can be heard on Z95, CISL 650, CKNW and StarFM during the annual AirCare Awareness Campaign that runs from June 4, 2002 to September 30, 2002. These highly creative announcements will also air on AirCare FM, the information station which runs at all 12 AirCare Inspection Centres and can also be heard on the AirCare website at www.aircare.ca.
The winners were chosen at a special judging event held at the offices of the David Suzuki Foundation. The judging panel included Dr. Bryce Kelpin of the British Columbia Medical Association, Joe Middleton, a creative writer with Z95 and CISL 650 and David Hocking, Communications Director with the David Suzuki Foundation.
"I was very impressed with the depth of knowledge we found in these entries," said David Hocking. "It is very reassuring that there are so many young people out there who truly care, and who are trying ot make a difference."
The 2nd annual AirCare AirWaves Radio Scholarship Contest is a joint partnership of the AirCare program, Envirotest Canada, contractor for AirCare, the British Columbia Lung Association, the British Columbia Medical Association, the David Suzuki Foundation, Z95, CISL and CKNW.
