Environment Minister Unveils Student Art
(Jun-22-2000)
Environment, Lands and Parks Minister Joan Sawicki unveiled the "We All Share the Air" transit advertising campaign today, with high praise for the student artwork it features.
The awareness campaign is a joint initiative by the British Columbia Lung Association, AirCare, Envirotest Canada, contractor for the AirCare program, and the B.C. Ministry of Environment, Lands and Parks. This year’s winning artist, Yoona Lee, is a Grade 12 student at Sentinel Secondary School in West Vancouver. She received a $3,000 scholarship at her recent high school graduation ceremonies, courtesy of the British Columbia Lung Association.
" The creativity that students demonstrated around the We All Share the Air theme was exceptional," said Scott McDonald, Executive Director of the BC Lung Association. " We were very impressed with the level of talent that’s out there in the schools. The contest showed us that students are aware and really care about environmental issues like air quality."
In addition to the unveiling of the " We All Share the Air" campaign artwork, Minister Sawicki handed out a second scholarship in the amount of $3,000 to Lorenzo Pepito, a Grade 12 student at Langley Fine Arts School. This jointly-sponsored scholarship award was provided to Mr. Pepito by the Ministry of Environment, Lands and Parks, along with Envirotest Canada, contractor for the AirCare program. It is awarded to the student artist who best reflects the sentiment that air quality is something we should all think about.
" The art created by these students is a breath of fresh air in itself - which is exactly what we want to ensure for all British Columbians," said Sawicki. " Their works help draw attention to the issue of air quality in the Lower Mainland and we hope they will inspire the public to become more aware of, and involved in, environmental stewardship."
The " We All Share the Air" campaign runs from early June through to the end of September. It is meant to enhance public awareness of the importance of clean air to our health and the environment. This year’s campaign features a strong media mix including Transit Shelter, Skytrain and West Coast Express platform ads, eight bus backs, full colour posters and bookmarks.
