AirCare Contest Winners Hit the Air Waves With Clean Air Messages
(May 31 2005)
Three Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley high school students with a keen grasp of regional air quality issues and an ear for music are the winners of the 5th annual AirCare AirWaves Radio Scholarship Contest.
The three winners are Korryn Bodner, a Grade 12 student from Mennonite Educational Institute Secondary in Abbotsford, Ace Dixon, a Grade 12 student from Burnaby Mountain Secondary, and Jason Liang, a Grade 11 student from Killarney Secondary in Vancouver. Their entries were selected from 65 entries in this year’s contest.
The AirCare AirWaves Radio Scholarship Contest challenges Grade 11 and 12 students in 152 high school throughout the Lower Mainland and the Fraser Valley to research, write and produce a 30-second radio announcement about the impact vehicle emissions have on air quality and lung health.
“The students utilized some very innovative ideas with creative flair to get across their clean air message,’ said Martin Lay, AirCare CEO. “The students’ messages clearly demonstrate the importance our youth place on the impact vehicle emissions have on air quality, our health and the environment.”
Each student receives a $1,000 scholarship for use toward their post-secondary education and their respective schools receive a $250 grant to support an environmental initiative at the school.
In addition to their scholarships, the students worked with the writing and production crew at Z95 to re-voice and re-produce their winning entries to broadcast standards. The winning entries may be heard on Z95, CISL, CKNW and StarFM during the annual AirCare Awareness Campaign which runs from June through September 2005. You can also hear the spots on AirCare FM (88.7 FM) at all 12 AirCare Inspection Centres and at www.aircare.ca.
The AirCare AirWaves Radio Scholarship Contest is a joint public awareness and education initiative of the AirCare program, the British Columbia Lung Association, the British Columbia Medical Association, the David Suzuki Foundation, Environmental Youth Alliance and Envirotest Canada.
