AirCare Supports 50th Anniversary of the Canadian Little League Championships

(Aug-07-2001)

(BURNABY, BC) – The AirCare program is please to be a sponsor of the 2001 Canadian Little League Championships. Teams from BC, the Prairies, Ontario, Quebec and the Maritimes will compete for the right to represent Canada at the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.

This year’s tournament is hosted by the Little Mountain Little League, and is being held August 4 - 11, 2001 at Hillcrest Park (near Nat Bailey Stadium) in Vancouver. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Canadian Little League Championships.

"There is a very real link between clean air and the health of our children," says Martin Lay, CEO of Pacific Vehicle Testing Technologies Ltd., the administrators of the AirCare program. "AirCare’s association with the Canadian Little League Championships reinforces the fact that improved air quality has long term health benefits for everyone, especially the youth in our region."

In less than twenty years, respiratory disease has increased four-fold across the country. Asthma is now the number one reason for hospital admissions among Canadian children (The Health of Canada’s Children, third edition, published by the Canadian Institute of Child Health). Air pollution is the greatest contributing factor in respiratory disease, including asthma. Cars and light-duty trucks are responsible for 50% of the local regions air quality.

The AirCare program ensures that all vehicles on our roads are operating as cleanly as possible. Almost one in three vehicles tested over the first seven years of the program was identified as being an excess polluter. Analyses show that identifying and repairing vehicle emissions problems has resulted in a 30 percent reduction in vehicle emissions in our region.
