New Campaign Informs Motorists of Proper Tire Inflation

(Jun-01-2010)

Burnaby, BC - The AirCare program, the British Columbia Automobile Association (BCAA) and the Automotive Retailers Association (ARA) would like take the opportunity on Clean Air Day (June 2) to remind motorists that ensuring their vehicle's tires are properly inflated is a simple way to help reduce vehicle emissions, protect the environment and save money.

Proper inflation is a critical part of a tire's ability to perform. Just like it's harder to pedal a bicycle with soft tires, a vehicle's engine has to work harder to propel a vehicle with underinflated tires, which increases exhaust emissions that contribute to smog and climate change.

On Clean Air Day, every motorist having an emissions test will receive a tire gauge, courtesy of AirCare BCAA and the ARA. The tire gauges will come with important information about the relationship between properly inflated tires and fuel economy, CO2 and smog-forming emissions.

Tire pressure checks performed on about 850 vehicles at AirCare show that only 22% of these vehicles had all four tires at the correct pressure.

"By ensuring the tires are properly inflated, vehicle owners can minimize their fuel consumption, save money at the pump and help safeguard our environment," says Dave Gourley, Operations Manager for the AirCare program.

Motorists can find out the proper tire pressure setting for their vehicle by checking the information placard that is located in the driver's door opening area. Consult your owner's manual for the location of the placard on your vehicle.

"Our members care about matters to do with the environment and anything that can help motorists save money," says Dale Finch, President and CEO of the ARA. "That's why we are very happy to be able to support this campaign."

Clean Air Day is a celebration of environmentally-friendly activities that promote clean air and good health across Canada. It is a great opportunity to make positive lifestyle choices for you, your family and your community.
