The ignition system is responsible for generating a strong electrical spark in each of the engine's cylinders to ignite the air/fuel mixture and produce combustion. Ignition problems usually result in excess HC emissions.
A tool called an ignition analyser or oscilloscope is used to test ignition systems. A technician should use an oscilloscope or ignition analyzer to ensure that there is adequate spark voltage and duration for all cylinders under the operating condition(s) when HC is high.
To test for incorrect spark advance, a device called a timing light is used. A timing light may be part of a larger engine analyser or it may be a separate unit. A timing light enables a technician to view the crankshaft position at the precise time that spark occurs.
