Crankcase Vapour Control System Testing

The Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) system should first be checked to ensure that the PCV valve is not plugged and is the correct size.

If the PCV system is operating correctly, the technician should check for oil contamination by removing the PCV valve from the crankcase while monitoring CO emissions ahead of the catalyst. If the measured CO drops by more than 1%, the engine oil should be changed and the test performed again. If CO still drops by more than 1%, excessive blow-by is indicated. Serious internal engine repairs will likely be required.
